Sergio Busquets of Barcelona is allegedly interested in joining Manchester City in the Premier League next summer. Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, is rumoured to be interested in reconnecting with the Barcelona midfielder at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City are reportedly planning for the exit of veteran midfielder Fernandinho next summer, according to El Nacional. The Brazilian's contract with the club is slated to expire at the end of the season, and Manchester City has yet to offer him an extension.
Manchester City will look to replace the 36-year-old in order to provide competition and backup for Rodri, the Spanish defensive midfielder. Busquets has apparently been named as one of the probable additions. Sergio Busquets came up through the Barcelona junior system before making his senior debut in the 2008-09 season under Pep Guardiola's tutelage. The Spaniard is largely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders of all time, and he is already a Camp Nou legend.
During his career with Barcelona, Busquets has helped the team achieve eight La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, and three Champions League titles. He has 650 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions and has 16 goals to his name.
He has also played a total of 133 times for the Spanish national team. This year, Busquets was named UEFA Nations League Player of the Tournament after leading Spain to the competition's final. The 33-year-old has been heavily criticised in recent years for his lacklustre performances for Barcelona. According to reports, Busquets is looking for a fresh challenge and wants to play in the Premier League.
Between 2008 and 2012, Pep Guardiola and Sergio Busquets won three La Ligas, two Copa del Reys, and two Champions Leagues with Barcelona.
Guardiola is said to be interested in signing Busquets next summer, believing that the midfielder will provide much-needed experience and calmness to Manchester City's squad and dressing room. Sergio Busquets is nearing the end of his career, despite having a plethora of experience and being regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time. As a result, the 33-year-old may fail to deal with the Premier League's physical demands and speed.
As a result, Manchester City could try to sign a young prospect like Denis Zakaria of Borussia Moenchengladbach or Yves Bissouma of Brighton & Hove Albion.
In recent months, Pep Guardiola has placed a strong emphasis on developing and offering opportunities to young players. Cole Palmer and James McAtee, for example, have been given numerous opportunity to play for Manchester City this season and show themselves at the top level.
